THE COPTIC GRAVE

*“My family consulted no one in the village,” my brother Nasser recalled. The burial ceremony was carried out quietly in our family cemetery. Now, after all these years, like all Muslim graves—marked only by a name and date, devoid of religious symbols or eulogies—one detail remains unusual: a Coptic family name, “Kyriakos,” alongside the dates “Born in 1911, Died in 1962.”<br><br><br>What is remarkable today, amid ongoing tensions between Christians and Muslims, Islam and the West, and periodic flare-ups between Egyptian Copts and Muslims, is that this grave has never been defaced. No graffiti, no acts of desecration—just quiet respect. In an era of global division and rising religious fundamentalism, this simple grave stands untouched.<br><br><br>Decades ago, in my village, Muslims and Copts lived together and died together in peace. As my brother Abdel Rafaa put it, “No diversity programs were needed, no axis of evil declared, no crusade or jihad launched.”*
